Message to Television Execs: America Has Bad Taste!

hollywood3Dear Mr/Mrs TV Executive

My goal is to CHANGE POP CULTURE as we know it!

As President Obama is about to try and encourage kids to embrace education, we are flooded with Republican viewpoints calling this an “excuse to brainwash”.

Aren’t we already being brainwashed daily by our TV’s?

Forget what political party you belong to… we as Americans, are filling our collective heads with garbage TV. Americas Got Talent, Project Runway, Little People Big World, Americas Best Dance Crew and more, and they are all paid for by (politically agnostic) SPONSORS and ADVERTISERS. The bigger problem here isn’t what the shows are…if they didn’t connect with people on some level they would have been cancelled. They couldn’t exist without people watching the shows and advertisers getting a return on their spending. So the question arises; why is America, as a culture, so entertained by vanilla dance groups and fashion models? Is it Escapism, mindless entertainment or do we Americans just have bad taste? Maybe it’s all three!

I personally love things about Horror culture, Halloween, Music and Art: all things that everyone in America knows about. Maybe they are your cup of tea and maybe not.

We know that The Television Industry is financed by advertisers, so who are the right advertisers to financially back an idea of a world that doesn’t focus on dumbing down America with twisted political agendas, or what some D- list celeb did on the Sunset Strip? Are you the TV exec that understands that there is a huge demographic of people who want more out of their entertainment?

I bitch a lot about the news on the front page of Yahoo, why do sports, war and trash TV all seem to find their way to the headlines…because Americans, as a group, are interested. The problem is the delivery and perception. Why should people give a crap about something they don’t know about? If we are only educated in trash TV and garbage culture how can we ever hear about a Nine Inch Nails concert without trolling websites that cater to it? Everyone knows that Tom Cruise is a Scientologist, and that the economy is lousy, we hear about these things regularly. News has changed from “news that informs” to “news that gets hits”. So if I really want people reading this blog, I should talk about Michael Jackson or Death Panels (or Obama!).

How can WE help inform people about pop culture that matters to the rest of us?
Where is the mass media that caters to those that don’t care about Hannah Montana and Sports scores? “Cool” places like G4 and USA Today’s great blog site Pop Candy, both center on “nerd culture”, but I don’t want to be a nerd, I want to be “cool, dark and edgy!”

The time is ripe for a big change! Americans are seemingly starving for anything to get their minds off of the hardships of life, work, and the falling economy. Those who want to know about the latest in trash culture should have TMZ, and those who care about sports should have ESPN. But where is the Edgy Outsider channel? I want rock n roll attitude, off beat and niche news with enough impact to get inside pop culture. Not a website, there are plenty of niche websites, but a powerhouse that creates and enforces A NEW POP CULTURE! Which advertisers have the courage to sponsor this powerhouse? Hot Topic has built a yearly $700 Million empire on the theory of perceived edginess and Rock n Roll attitude with no traditional advertising. Why hasn’t a Television Network capitalized on this hugely underserved market?

Would YOU get behind a TV channel devoted to embracing a new A NEW POP CULTURE?

Do you want to stay at a channel that promotes garbage, or do you have the courage to create a TV channel, which has the balls to “Think Different” by doing different. Interesting art, international appeal, sexy, music oriented, and edgy programming. Do you remember when MTV was MTV? Before it became a reality channel, back when they did all their shows out of one room? They started small, and grew to become a powerhouse! Would we even care about Michael Jackson if MTV never existed?

Let’s focus on the person who wants a less conventional life and one that this based on extraordinary, yet unique. I think its time for this change, and if YOU can help make this a reality…we should talk! My goal is to change POP CULTURE and I think that America is ready for this Change!
