Stand By for Technical Difficulties…
The wonderful world of computers, has afforded me much love and much frustration. Case in point, the painful task of waiting to see the footage we shot.
Last week I shot a video for the band Kill Hannah, and for the past 4 days we have been ingesting the footage into the computer so we can edit the thing.
We shot on a RED camera system at 4K so the files are gigantic. My edit suite is about 4 years old, the process is taking forever. Not that this is surprising, just irritating when I want to get started.
This problem happens regularly with technology, it’s always some technical thing that gets in the way of actually doing the work. A few years back I was helping a friend on a short film, he needed some green screen work done and a few VFX to enhance backgrounds. Nothing difficult as I used to do VFX everyday, yet because the short film was shot at 3 different frame rates, and 3 different codecs it was a nightmare to finish. Flash forward to last year on my pal Micah Gallo’s film “WICK” (which I also produced), I needed to create an effect where I added digital smoke swirling around a practical monster. Seemed simple enough, yet getting the thing to look right and not all digital never quite worked out.
So the lesson to be learned here is patience. But not just for the tech stuff, patience is a virtue that I do not normally possess. I will just try and stay busy with the 8 zillion other things that are going on and wait PATIENTLY to get editing the video.
